People /= fulfill.

Linking "generally" with other words in the sentence which make grammatical sense changes the meaning of the sentence very little.Emu Samhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05352556221263050952noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-16594468.post-87976499332565709982009-06-17T22:47:47.944-06:002009-06-17T22:47:47.944-06:00This is yet another post for me to bookmark. Thank you.

I also started to write a comment on "generally" a few days ago, but it got quite involved and confusing, so I sent it as an e-mail to a friend instead in hopes we could, between us, come up with a better way to express the problem. My initial decision was that, when spending a little time parsing the sentence, I lost how "generally" could be a problem in the first place. "People generally" vs "generally fulfill" mean very similar things.Emu Samhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05352556221263050952noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-16594468.post-48541350936716668402009-06-17T01:07:56.527-06:002009-06-17T01:07:56.527-06:00Specifically the ambiguity is that generally can b...Specifically the ambiguity is that generally can be read in two dimensions - across people or across instances. It is meant it in the latter but too many read it in the former. If there was some way of phrasing it to avoid the wrong dimension, that would be good surely?Martin Freedmanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16952072422175870627noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-16594468.post-47315216266326914832009-06-17T01:00:27.807-06:002009-06-17T01:00:27.807-06:00Hi Alonzo

It is the ambiguity of "generally" that is the issue, not that when read correctly it not does properly represent what it is meant to, it does.Martin Freedmanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16952072422175870627noreply@blogger.com
