(See Eugene Volkh)

Yet, there is no case in favor of the legitimacy of this prejudice.

As far as "infecting the child with gayness", this argument is as (il)legitimate as the argument that one might 'infect' the child with Shiitism or with Christianity. As an argument for wrongness on the basis of harm done, these arguments beg the question.Alonzo Fyfehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05687777216426347054noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-16594468.post-1149652273810054092006-06-06T21:51:00.000-06:002006-06-06T21:51:00.000-06:00One could hardly argue that it is legitimate to pr...One could hardly argue that it is legitimate to prohibit atheists from marrying or from adopting children on the basis that they do not have a “religion.”
Well, not *reasonably*, no. But some people do argue just that. Specifically, in child adoption and custody cases, some parties have tried to argue that an atheist was not a fit parent because they would give the child a non-religious upbringing. (If you're religious, you're supposed to jump to the conclusion that this is harmful to the child without any further prompting, and certainly without anything so tedious as actually presenting evidence.) It's not hard to imagine the same "reasoning" being applied to Muslims, Jews, or even members of the "wrong" sect of the majority religion.

Similar reasoning is used against gay parents - they'll infect the child with gayness (never mind that that may well be impossible), and that is clearly bad for them (in a manner you're supposed to accept without trying to think about, because then you might notice the lack of evidence for any harmful effect of homosexuality other than the bigotry of others.)Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-16594468.post-1149626719964273042006-06-06T14:45:00.000-06:002006-06-06T14:45:00.000-06:00meanwhile while all of this is occuring We find re...meanwhile while all of this is occuring We find research like this mentioned here.

http://www.atheists.org/flash.line/ath1.htm

How about a little more intolerance and bigotry while they are at it?Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-16594468.post-1149607920105352842006-06-06T09:32:00.000-06:002006-06-06T09:32:00.000-06:00xpLet's start with the easy one: no objection can ...xpLet's start with the easy one: no objection can be raised against telling schoolchildren that "being gay is okay" unless one can demonstrate that "being gay is okay" is false. After all, these organizations are involved in campaigns to tell schoolchildren that "being gay is not okay."

The message "being gay is not okay" is an extremely dangerous message to tell a child who is gay -- leading to suicide and other forms of self-destructive behavior.

Next, there is a logical difference between the "lifestyle associated with homosexuality" and "homosexuality", just as the "lifestyle associated with professional sports" is not relevant to the moral permissibility of playing baseball.

It argues for making changes that would allow for a healthier lifestyle. Which, in this case, would be an argument in favor of homosexual marriage (in order to promote and secure committed relationships), not an argument for prohibiting such marriages.

One thing we can say about homosexual acts . . . they have NEVER resulted in an unplanned pregnancy and all of the problems that follow from this.

Indeed, pregnancy itself is unhealthy, putting a great deal of physical stress on a woman's body, leading to all sorts of complications and, in some cases, death. Yet, we do not use the health risks of pregnancy as an argument for a moral prohibition on getting pregnant. Rather, we realize that there are other values at stake that are worth the risk, and we leave the question of whether or not to take those risks up to the individual.

Then, of course, there is still the question of whether such claims are true. However, there is more than one way to engage in a "campaign of deception." One way is to make false statements. Another is to make invalid inferences.Alonzo Fyfehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05687777216426347054noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-16594468.post-1149604929322615682006-06-06T08:42:00.000-06:002006-06-06T08:42:00.000-06:00Here are some excerpts from an article I found on ...Here are some excerpts from an article I found on the internet:

"lifestyle associated with homosexuals with its emphasis on drinking, promiscuous sex, and violence leads to many early deaths from causes other than AIDS as well as serious physical illnesses"

"The lifestyle is one that encourages promiscuity, leaving homosexuals open to all kinds of STDs and possibly even cancers."

"studies have shown that many, many homosexuals, even those in "committed" relationships, do not have any deep sense of fidelity to their partners. Furthermore, even those relationships that could perhaps be termed monogamous" cannot be considered healthy because they usually involve anal intercourse, a practice that is simply unhealthy given that it frequently leads to bacterial and parasitical STDs."

"homosexual groups are engaged in campaigns to tell schoolchildren that "being gay is okay."

"The fact is that the homosexual lifestyle is one that is dysfunctional, unhealthy and can even be deadly, not to mention that it is immoral."

Here is the address:

http://www.cnsnews.com/ViewCommentary.asp?Try=No&Page=\Commentary\archive\200307\COM20030723e.html

I am not sure about the veracity of these statements and studies that have been conducted, but someone who doesn't use critical thinking (i.e. faithful) can be influenced by these statements because this article could be considered to be a credible source since it was written by chairman and CEO of Free Congress foundation (another Washington think-tank, just like CEI). Could it be that Free Congress Foundation also engages in a "Campaign of Deception" on homosexuality? I think so.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-16594468.post-1149583526415921512006-06-06T02:45:00.000-06:002006-06-06T02:45:00.000-06:00Why are Christians so obsessed with gay people?
