At most, they attributed the codes they created to their gods.

Secondly, it's interesting that you'd ask for examples of civilizations that prospered without god-given moral codes. Using your own criteria, until the rise of european empires (early 1000s?), ALL civilizations rose without god-given codes. Unless you are claiming that the empires of Egypt, Sumeria, Babylon, Persia, Mongolia, Macedonia, Rome, India, China, etc, were all christian civilizations. Or, I suppose, you could claim that the codes were given to these people by THEIR gods, and therefore the christian god is NOT the only god. Have fun with that.

Finally, your challenge of "anything close to the ten commandments" is laughable. The good commandments - don't kill, steal, or lie - are so basic that even stone-age barbarians already knew of them. The rest of the commandments are either silly ("don't worship statues!"), irrelevant ("don't take my god's name in vain"), or immoral (how do you square "have no other gods before me" with Freedom of Religion?). Hell, I could've done better than that when I was in High School.Eneaszhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14500232958398471146noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-16594468.post-18349897147249398182009-10-05T19:03:28.453-06:002009-10-05T19:03:28.453-06:00Here is my problem with your supposition: I just ...Here is my problem with your supposition: I just need an example.

In my searches, I have yet to find an atheistic culture endure, let alone progress morally, to the extent that America has endured or progressed. How about given me an example of a culture that spontaneously or independently generated anything close to the ten commandments. 508 BC Greek Cleisthenes' democracy resulted in the execution of Socrates for "corrupting the youth of his day!"

Where are the great atheistic cultures and empires of all time that had the ability to develop into great civilizations with no God-given moral codes?jammerinohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16844703543570561478noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-16594468.post-477154406106720382009-10-05T18:54:30.700-06:002009-10-05T18:54:30.700-06:00This comment has been removed by the author.jammerinohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16844703543570561478noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-16594468.post-10567975814221118922009-10-05T18:13:15.831-06:002009-10-05T18:13:15.831-06:00I doubt the possibility of ever having a democracy...I doubt the possibility of ever having a democracy without the existence of deity. Elitism--being controlled by the most popular people--and the crass nature of human beings caused our American Founders to often state that our form of government cannot function without a belief in God. A system of government with its imperative moral codes and system of ethics could never be developed apart from a deity, and that basic principle in America's democracy has been the reason for its success. It only exists today, because is was developed along side the value system and moral code of ethics that founded this country, namely, Judeo-Christian morals and ethics. Any democracy must be based on viable value system or moral code, such as the one on which democracy was founded, namely the Judeo-Christian code of ethics or basis of morality. Despite education, scholars worldwide agree that the post-modern secular world hasn't been able to offer a tenable and systematic form of morals and ethics aside from Judeo-Christian ones. Why is it that secular thought has really produced nothing of value morally or in a governmental form. It is because government without a deity is not plausible.jammerinohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16844703543570561478noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-16594468.post-1134673551434390072005-12-15T12:05:00.000-07:002005-12-15T12:05:00.000-07:00Well, that could be true.Well, that could be true.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-16594468.post-1133973545532308592005-12-07T09:39:00.000-07:002005-12-07T09:39:00.000-07:00Interested. It's only a very narrow brand of dogmatic literalists who are going to hold that everything that makes up the content of their moral revelation is obviously interpreted in a certain way or easily applied in any given circumstances. The believer in this sort of moral progress would simply think that moral progress is a matter of having a better understanding of revelation and applying practical ethics from general principles.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-16594468.post-1127273727168619432005-09-20T21:35:00.000-06:002005-09-20T21:35:00.000-06:00mbains: I intend, at some time, to write an essay ...mbains: I intend, at some time, to write an essay dealing with the moral character of those who would use false quotes.

There is no clearer example of 'bearing false witness' then to claim that somebody said something that they never said.

boelf: Well, the challenges are what makes life interesting.
